Dark, wet ink wash and light accents of color capture the lyrical mood of an autumnal moonlit night at Lake Tai and Mount Dongting. A round moon hangs low in the sky at top right, with a diffuse glow slightly brightening the clouds and sky below. Two islands sit in the water below, the larger (closer) of the two has four boats moored just offshore. Up close the boats appear as freely brushed lines, and yet at a distance, their forms come into focus. A building sits on the closer island, light shining in the windows. The silhouette of a pagoda can be seen on the further island.

This hanging scroll depicts a small circular image of a winter scene. The scroll itself appears to have three components. The outermost border layer is dark and patterned. As we get closer to the painting the shades lighten with the innermost rectangle closest to the circular painting being a pale yellowish-brown. The layer in between has a floral pattern. The painting itself has snowcapped trees and mountains as well as clouds.

This small circular painting depicts an autumn scene as the title suggests. The layers of the scroll are almost identical to its pair (1998/2.8.1). In the small circle are what appear to be two peaks and foggy-looking clouds.
