A woman wearing a black hat reclines in a sketchily-rendered chair. Shown in a three-quarter view and angled towards the viewer's left, she sits quietly, looking straight ahead. She wears a fur-trimmed coat, and flexes her right hand, which is curled into a loose fist, upwards. The background is left blank. The entire image is covered with a series of heavy diagonal slashes.
A woman in an elaborate striped dress stands in an outdoor landscape, shading her eyes with her right hand and looking directly out at the viewer. She holds a white umbrella that dramatically frames her head (capped by a white hat) against the dark sky in the upper background of the composition. A contrasting white area of ground beneath the black sky leads into the foreground, where the woman stands at the edge of a pond surrounded by reeds and a large stalked plant.
The main figure in this print is a man standing in contraposto pose in a generic outdoor setting. His right hand rests on his hip, a guitar is slung across his back, and a piece of cloth is tied around his head. His gaze meets that of the audience. He stands in the center of the composition. To his left is a seated woman with a naked baby in her lap; a sack lays on the ground next to her bare feet. Behind her, a standing boy leans his head backwards in order to drink from the upturned jug he holds. He is shown in profile. All of the depicted people wear simple, loose-fitting and slightly worn-looking costumes. Three-quarters of the background space is comprised of a cloudy sky; a rocky terrain is suggested in the midddle background.
The print is signed in the plate, lower right corner, "éd. Manet."

The vertical rectangular space of the image is completely filled with a detailed rendering of a section of an intricate Gothic portal façade. In the foreground a checked tile floor creates a recession into the space. In the center of the composition two doors are framed by a high, pointed arch. The space of the arch is filled with fine cut-out ornamental stonework. Arched niches containing figural sculptures flank each side of the main archway, and one also separates the two doors. The top of the image is framed by two rows of geometric ornamental decor.
Beneath the image is an ornamental panel of simulated marble, on which the title of the image is written in gothic script: "Eglise Notre Dame / Les Andelys".
A Gothic-style church tower is seen in the middle distance. It dominates a cloudless sky in the upper portion of the image, with trees rising behind the lower portion of the building and a single story outcropping of the building expanding to the tower's left. The architectural details, especially the carved stonework and patterned brickwork, are rendered with precision.
