A crowd gathers in the side chapel of a church around a group of seated figures and an infant. A man with a long flowing beard sits and holds the infant in his hands above a plate, while another man leans forward in his chair and peers through his spectacles at the child as he performs a circumcision. A plaque with the artist's initials, "HG," lies on the floor in the foreground.

Ships at anchor in a lagoon is the focus of this image. Smaller boats are tied to the quay in the foreground and along the horizon line is a cityscape, leading to a large church at the left, with an impressive facade, dome, and bell tower behind. A large ship is moored between the viewer and the church. Much of the foreground is occupied by water without boats, leaving the elements of the composition largely in the middle distance.

The scene shows a group of buildings with white colored rooftops. Two buildings rise up in the foreground on the right and left. The right building has a red side with vertical lines hashed into it. The left building has two white triangles on its roof. In the middle ground is a smaller building with a green-domed tower rising up the middle of the composition. A small red figure stands on the white ground to the right of this tower. The background shows the large white rooftop of another building, with small dark rooflines of buildings visible behind it.
