Credit LineMuseum PurchaseSubject matterThis work is characteristic of many drawings and prints Jawlensky made of heads during this time period. Each was completed in a purposefully simple manner. He used as few lines and details as possible, seeking to focus not on the representation of a person, but on the metaphorical properties Jawlensky believed would be apparent in the faces. He believed the entire universe could be revealed through a person's face.
Physical DescriptionThis is a line drawing of a woman's head inscribed within a vertical rectangle. Simple horizontal and vertical lines depict the eyes, nose, and mouth while a few curved lines above each eye depict a hair line, and a large "U" forms the chin.
