In this poster, graphic designer Shigeo Fukuda places Mount Fuji and the moon symmetrically in the center of the composition. While the mountain is barely suggested in black and white, many viewers would recognize the subject through visual associations. The image contains a surprising twist for the viewer to ponder: the design of the moon over a mountain is reminiscent of a picture card in the popular game of hanafuda (meaning “flower cards”). But there is a stick connected to the circle: is it actually a lollipop, or is it a magnifying glass, or is it something else?

Shigeo Fukuda was one of the most popular graphic designers in the latter half of the twentieth century; his intriguing poster designs have been exhibited and published all over the world.
