Philippe Halsman worked extensively for magazines and contributed numerous images, particularly to "Life" magazine. Although his work was widely published, there has not been extensive written critical work on his photography.

Subject matter
This was most likely a beauty shot or advertisement for a fashion magazine. Like many of Halsmann's images from this time period, he focuses on hair styles. In this dramatic head shot, the woman's fair skin and light, voluminous hair contrast against the dark backdrop.
