Subject matter
Francis Bedford was an acclaimed British landscape photographer with a background in illustration. This image depicts the interior of Exeter Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter at Exeter, in Exeter, England, a site which Bedford photographed extensively. Here, the reredos, the screen behind the altar, fills the center of the composition.. The altar extends between arches and is surrounded by ornate carvings.
