Subject matter
This anonymous painting is reminiscent of some of the paintings done by American artists in the early decades of the twentieth century. While the text is not clear in the open book, it is possibly a Bible or other religious text.

Physical Description
This still life shows one book open on a table with a row of books behind it. To the right of the open book is a small cup and three more stacked books. To the left is an inkwell and a small blue booklet.
