The ground is made up of patches of white, yellow, pink, and blue.  Thick black outlines are used throughout and the paint has been applied in a very thick and factured manner. Traces of newspaper appear to have been laid on the painting while it was still wet and became stuck and are visible in the clouds at the top and in the white portion of the central building, just under the street lamp.

This winter landscape scene is painted in light pastel colors including, white, blue, pink and gray. The artist has used vigorous brushstrokes and the paint has been applied thickly on the canvas. The scenery is not painted in detail but done in an impressionistic manner.<br /> In the foreground, a snow-covered hill slopes downward from the upper right side of the composition to the lower left. There is one tall tree that frames the scene on the far right and several others clustered on the left. This is a brightly colored oil painting of a street scene. Buildings are depicted in pink, yellow, and white.  A lavender and blue sky with white and yellow clouds makes up the background. Two women stand in the lower left corner; another woman and a black dog are seen on the right side. The ground is made up of patches of white, yellow, pink, and blue.  Thick black outlines are used throughout and the paint has been applied in a very thick and factured manner. Traces of newspaper appear to have been laid on the painting while it was still wet and became stuck and are visible in the clouds at the top and in the white portion of the central building, just under the street lamp.

Subject matter
Thomas Hart Benton had an ambitious goal to create a historical series depicting life in America. In 1928 he traveled around the country, primarily in the South, Midwest, and Southwest, sketching scenes of American life. Benton states that this image is a reconstruction of a coal mine strike which was a common event in the late 1920s and early 1930s when he was traveling the nation for inspiration for his mural project. Given the date and image context, it is highly probable that this was inspired by Virgina coal miners strikes. The print shows two officers firing on strikers as they stand in front of the looming mining complex. The tall black tipple seems to extend menacing arms out toward the strikers. One of the strikers has been shot and has fallen to the ground while his fellow workers hold their ground. Prior to being made as a print, Mine Strike was an oil painting done in the same year. His idea for an American historical series of paintings was abandoned when he was asked to paint a mural for the New School for Social Research in 1930.
