Subject matter
Spring is an abstract painting with expressive swaths of color. The artist Buffie Johnson moved to East Hampton in 1950 and tried to join the Abstract Expressionists. Because of their general disinclination to include women, she struggled to be viewed as an equal. By the end of the decade she was commissioned to complete more than 200 panels of murals for the Astor Theater which was one of her most memorable pieces of work.
