Subject matter
Portrait of Dorothy Carleton Smyth, a Scottish artist. She holds a book in her left hand, in the lower left corner of the composition. She wears an academic costume, including a hat. "Ex Libris," or "From the library of" is inscribed in large block type in the upper left corner. This font resembles the cover of the publication Camera Work, in which it was published.
