Subject matter
This portrait of Arsène Houssaye was featured in Galerie Contemporaine, published between 1876 and 1884. Each issue featured well-known literary, political, and artistic figures. Houssaye was a French novelist and poet. This photograph by Etienne Carjat, like many featured in Galerie Contemporaine, was made years before it was published in the periodical. 

Physical Description
A portrait of a man wearing a suit coat and necklace. He has a large beard. He looks to his left, following the conventions of 19th-century studio portraiture.
