Subject matter
As the son of a mariner, Boudin spent considerable time as a youth in his father's vessel. This painting, depicting a view of the port in the French city of Le Havre, demonstrates Boudin's intimate knowledge of the sea and related subject matter. Boudin captures both the atmospheric effects of the sky, as well as the water's liquid surface. Thick, agitated applications of paint articulate the clouds, which contrast to the long strokes used to represent the glassy surface of the sea.
