Subject matter
General George Thomas cuts a stern figure as he sits with his body in profile and head turned slightly outward in this photograph. Despite his high rank within the United States Army at the time, the uniform he wears appears relatively modest. Thomas sits low in the image; his head just reaches the center of the composition. Here he poses for the photographer Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of noteworthy United States Army and Navy officers during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Physical Description
Half-length, seated portrait of a bearded man in a military uniform.
