Subject matter
The chiseled visage of United States Navy Lieutenant Commander Lewis Kimberly gazes with a neutral expression to the left out of the picture plane. The bust-length portrait of the naval officer hovers amid a blank background; his torso appears to dissolve into the surrounding beige void. Kimberly served in several posts in the Western Theater and the Gulf of Mexico during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Julius Brill, a German-born photographer active in New York City in the middle decades of the nineteenth century.

Physical Description
Bust-length portrait of a mustachioed man in a military uniform floating on a blank background.
