Subject matter
In this photograph, the head and shoulders of United States Army brevet general Charles G. Halpine hover amid a blank white field. The buttons and shoulder plaque on his dark coat are all that signal his military status. Halpine served during the American Civil War (1861-65), before and after which he was occupied as a journalist, author, and editor. Here he poses for Charles DeForest Fredricks, a New York-based photographer known for cartes-de-visite.
