Subject matter
In this photograph, United States Army General David McMurtie Gregg sits in profile with an emotionless expression. The blank background behind him is a wash of various tones of light and medium gray. Bright lighting drains much of the tonal variation from the man's face, save for the details surrounding his tired eyes. Gregg served mainly with the cavalry during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
