Credit LineGift of Howard and Patricia YamaguchiSubject matterMomi, the plain red lining on the upper half of the kimono, was originally achieved with safflowers, and considered to have medicinal properties. This made momi an excellent choice for linings, which were usually done in a plain weave.
Physical DescriptionWhite silk with stenciled (katazone) hitta kanoko design in red, and woven brocade patches using paper strips coated in black and red lacquer and silver (ginran). Upper half of lining is red plain weave silk (momi); lower half is lime green silk damask (rinsu), woven in T-diaper pattern (suyagata).
