Credit LineGift of Dr. James HayesSubject matterIchikawa Danjūrō VIII was born in Edo in 1823 and active from 1827. He was the oldest son of Ichikawa Danjūrō VII and brother of Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. He was known for his roles in jidaimono (period plays) as well as sewamono (contemporary plays). He committed suicide in 1854.
Physical DescriptionIn this print, a man stands with a sword in both hands near his shoulder. He is barefoot and wears a short black robe with a white crest on the sleeve. The tip of another sword is visible on the left side of the print. Behind him are low bushes and open water.
