Subject matter
Peonies are a symbol of bravery and honor while the heron is a symbol of good luck. The heron is commonly found in many Japanese arts. The theme of flower and bird paintings is popular in Japanese art.

Physical Description
The subjects of this hanging scroll are as the title suggests, a heron, a willow, and peonies by a stream. The heron is flying in the upper half of the painting with the stream below it. The stream continues into the background into a hill. There is a leafless tree coming out of the water on the right obscuring a bunch of pink peonies. There is an inscription on the bottom right under the tree followed by a red seal.
