Subject matter
This photograph represents a tableau from a Catholic church in Calvario, Patzuaro, Mexico. Christ's crucifixion forms the central theme of the image. It appears that he has just been removed from the cross, the stigmata represented, with two women and a man looking over him. It is likely that these women are his mother, Mary, and Mary Magdalene, while the man could be Saint John. The scene is framed by a floral banner below and lace curtains drawn to the side. In the background, more lace fabric adorns the space behind the crucifix. The two women wear lace mantles.

This photograph is from Paul Strand's The Mexican Portfolio published in 1967 by Paul Strand. The portfolio consists of a series of 20 images depicting Mexico's people, architecture, landscape, and churches. It was first published in 1940 under the name Photographs of Mexico, and reprinted under Strand's supervision in 1967 as The Mexican Portfolio.
