Subject matter
Throughout his career, Augustus John did at least two formal portraits of William Butler Yeats, one in 1907 and another in 1930. This print is possibly from a study he did in preparation for the 1907 portrait requested by W.B. Yeats. The poet ended up rejecting the portrait John did of him in favor of one done by John Singer Sargent.
