Credit LineGift of Howard and Margaret BondSubject matterTaken by prolific but little known photographer E. Huard, this photograph is one of many scenes Huard photographed in Saint Petersburg in the 1850s and 1860s. This view focuses on the bronze equestrian statue of Nicholas I of Russia, which was installed in front of the newly constructed Saint Isaac's Cathedral in 1859. The sculpture, which is centered in the composition and taken from below, emphasizes the upward thrust of the rearing horse, a technically sophisticated design that is notable for being the first equestrian statue in Europe with only two support points--the horse's two hooves.
