Credit LineGift of Mr. Maurice F. LyonsLabel copyThe Soldier's unmistakable cry "Hey Fellows!" summoning the other men to the newly arrived books explains at once both the intention of the appeal for money and the purpose the books will serve. The American Library Association played an integral role in the war effort as they recognized that the men in uniform also needed literary and intellectual equipment. Their purpose to provide libraries, books and other reading materials arose out of this need. The design for this poster was made in response to a request to the Division of Pictorial Publicity of which Sheridan was a member, by the American Library Association. Together the image and the text explicitly compose the message of appeal. The white uniform of the reading sailor echoes suitably the white lettering of the words "money" and "books." The up-right soldier in a pose similar to the well known image of the Statue of Liberty is a reminder that the book and knowledge go hand in hand with liberty and democracy.
