Subject matter
Lombard summered in Monhegan, Maine and developed much of his aesthetic and subject matter there. Monhegan was a well known artist colony that had existed since the mid-nineteenth century. This image is from the end of Lombard's first period, when he was more physically able and could still walk over the rocks. The large scale is more typical of this earlier stage.
