Subject matter
With the model’s weight resting on her heels, her stomach and leg muscles become the focus of the frame. The crop of the image transforms the figure into abstract groupings of planes and ovals. The model is the dancer Bertha Wardell. In response to seeing Weston's work at the University of California at Los Angeles, she volunteered to pose for him. Weston was drawn to the physical strength and grace of her body. Subsequently, she became a friend and lover of Weston's.

Physical Description
Profile view of the torso and legs of a kneeling female nude, with one knee resting on the ground. The figure's form is located in an empty setting where the blank wall and floor meet.
