Credit LineGift of Mr. and Mrs. W. Howard BondSubject matterThis photograph depicts a street-level view down a medieval Italian alleyway. Spanning across the narrow gap between the buildings are a series of five archways, each at a different height, which are meant to brace and provide architectural support. The alleyway is lined with shuttered windows, hovels, stoops, and doorways. An illegible shop sign hangs in the middle of the alley next to a wrought-iron lantern. The photographer’s presence is known to the inhabitants of the space; on the street, a young boy in dark clothing and a woman in a light dress are seated and facing towards the camera. In the upper left of the image, two women lean out of a windowsill and look down at photographer. The camera’s sharp focus makes apparent the rich plethora of textures on the stained and worn alleyway.
Physical DescriptionThis photograph depicts a street-level view down a medieval Italian alleyway. The alleyway has archways that connect the buildings on either side. Seated on the street and leaning out of a window, a small group of spectators face the camera.
