Jean Daullé
Portrait of Hyacinthe Rigaud

The painting is nearly entirely dominated by mountains, yet nestled among them lie two small buildings. Around these structures and near the placement of the viewer are dark plum trees with spiky branches and pink and white blossoms.

Bamboo and Rock
1960 – 1975
Gift of Dr. Cheng-Yang and Mrs. Shirley Chang
The branches of a plum tree stretch skyward, skillfully utilizing the vertical space of this hanging scroll. Black dots are used as accents along the branches, making them look knotted and full of texture. These heavy features are offset by the delicate depiction of plum blossoms. Calligraphic text is in the upper right corner, with two seals.
Li Jishou
Plum Blossoms, after Jin Nong
19th century
Museum purchase made possible by the Margaret Watson Parker Art Collection Fund
Two seated men, depicted in three-quarter length, with flowing beards and long robes look out from this print. A painting of a seated woman holding a child on her lap sits on an easel between them. A closed book is placed before the man on the left, and a second book sits open next to the figure on the right. This man holds a mahlstick, used by painters to steady their hand as they work, in his right hand. A palette and brushes are placed on a ledge in front of him.
Ludolphe Buesinck
St. Luke and St. Mark with a Portrait of the Virgin and Child

In this image of bamboo bent under heavy snow the leaves are depicted with vigorous yet controlled strokes of the brush, while the snow is indicated by surrounding areas of blank paper with dark ink, a traditional technique in monochrome ink painting.
