Credit LineGift from the Collection of David S. Rosen MD, MPHSubject matterThis photograph depicts a closeup portrait of a little girl standing on a cobblestone street in the southern Italian city of Naples. The girl stands close to the camera, her face and upper torso filling the left side of the frame. Expressionless, she stares into the lens, her dark eyes calmly regarding the photographer. Behind her on the cobblestone street, stands another girl in a floral dress. Playfully posing for the camera, this girl strikes a dramatic pose, her feet turned inwards, and her arm raised to cup the back of her head, her face coyly hiding behind her shoulder. Unlike the girl in the foreground, she is out of focus, yet offers a dynamic foil to the contemplative and serious mood of her companion.
