Subject matter
This print was an illustration for a work of poetry by Max Jacob, À poèmes rompus. This is an example of Villon's later work, much of which consisted of illustrations for books and collections. In this print, Villon's earlier ties to Cubism and abstraction are visible in the use of non-representational shapes of color that are layered to give some sense of depth, yet are still morphous enough to suggest an elegant lyricism.

Physical Description
This print consists of numerous abstracted splotches of color on a primarily grey background. Blues and blacks predominate in the lower areas and reds, oranges, and yellows in the upper. Green appears as punctuation in a few spots.
