Subject matter
This work comes from the Aluminum Series of prints (1970) which Stella based on his shaped canvas painting series of the same title from 1961.  He combined techniques of silkscreen and lithography in order to emulate the aesthetic of the metallic paintings.  The titles of the works in this series refer a range of things, people, historical events and places, which Stella refered to as "literary or glamorous."  Newstead Abbey refers to property owned by the family of the British romantic poet, Lord Byron.
