Credit LineGift of Carl W. MelcherSubject matterThis photograph depicts a white horse standing by the side of a gravel road in a rural setting. The horse’s head is turned away from the photographer, its neck craned to the side. Its left ear is visible however, as is its dark mane, which forms a wispy shadow against the cloudy sky. Through the horse’s legs a scraggily wire fence runs parallel to the gravel road. Behind the horse looms the darkly silhouetted canopy of a tree, which stands in sharp contrast to the brightness of the horse’s body and the cloudy sky beyond. The photograph was created from a crouching position, causing the horse to further tower over the viewer. This angle paired with the horse’s brawn lends the animal a powerful majesty.
