As told in the bibical Apochrypha, the virtuous Susanna was spied upon by two Elders as she bathed. They tried to seduce her, but she refused them. They then falsely accused her of adultry. Her guilt was disproved when Daniel cross-examined them. Here in the first scene of a set of four, Susanna is presented as a voluptuous beauty, the object of the lecherous gaze of the two old men in the background.
