Subject matter
After his emigration to the United States, George Grosz largely replaced the scathing social commentary and brutal subject matter for which he was famous with more painterly landscapes and nudes; while in America the artist made several sojourns to Cape Cod, whose seashores would provide the setting for numerous landscape watercolors and prints in which sand dunes feature prominently.
