Subject matter
This photograph depicts Ward's Cemetery in Bodie, California, a former gold town in the late nineteenth century. In the foreground of the image several rectangular gravesites are marked with wooden barricades. Behind them, separated by a wooden fence, appears a series of rolling hills, uninterrupted by houses or other man-made structures. Ward's Cemetery is the third print from a series of twelve that document the ghost town of Bodie, now a National Historic Landmark.
